Synopsis

Mountains in Motion: The Canadian Rockies is a time-lapse short about the life of the alpine landscape and the experiences of the people who have moved through it within past centuries.

“We were not pioneers ourselves, but we journeyed over old trails that were new to us, and with hearts open. Who shall distinguish?” – J. Monroe Thorington

A lantern glows dimly in a canvas tent, the stars expansive in the sky and night air disturbed only by the rigorous scratching of pencil on paper. Stiff, frozen boots rest outside the tent door while their owner sits inside, intensely reflecting on the day’s discoveries.

The early mountaineering pioneer could never have foreseen what the future would hold for his written manifestations of the Canadian Rockies. Present-day adventurers, however, know much about those first encounters with the majestic peaks of the Canadian Rockies because of the literature left behind.

In Mountains in Motion: The Canadian Rockies we witness a convergence, a point at which explorers, both past and present, meet and discover a common sense of inspiration, awe and respect for a remarkable landscape. Dramatic peaks, crumbling glaciers, surging rivers and frozen waterfalls come alive with intense detail.

By combining time-lapse photography with an original story and musical score, Mountains in Motion brings the landscape center stage and offers a thrilling new perspective that re-establishes the Canadian Rockies among the finest mountains in the world.
